Secrets to Selling a House During a Pandemic (And Beyond)

Selling a home- organization
Selling your home is an extremely emotional process. There is no perfect time to sell a house, the uncertainty many of us felt during the Covid-19  pandemic may have kept some sellers from entering the market – and who may now be giving it another thought.

After helping many clients sell this year we have a few tips for the process, and we hope they help!

Getting ready for showing:

Declutter first

Selling your home is a perfect time to declutter. What have you accumulated over the years that is now unnecessary? Tackle every closet, cabinet and shelf, and get organized. You may be able to get rid of a surprising amount of stuff.

Ready, set, “go bins”

It is good to find a way to hide stuff on a moment’s notice to accommodate showings. Our solution: “go bins.”  We suggest stackable, closable plastic bins around your home so you can stash your clutter quickly, and head out the door.

Preparing for the move:

Here are packing and organizing tips I found helpful:

Packing tips
  1. Have plenty of supplies: Get your packing materials early, and order more than you think you’ll need (we underestimated and had to run out for more!).

  2. Label everything: Pack and label your boxes by room so the movers can put them in the right place in the new house. If you go a step further and list specific contents – for example, write “kitchen dishware and glasses” rather than just “kitchen” – unpacking will be easier.
  3. Carry your essentials: Make a list of things you need immediately, like towels, toiletries, diapers, and my coffee maker. Move those items yourself so you can have them as soon as you need them. Also packed a cooler with perishable foods and our favorite condiments to stock the fridge in the new house.

Settling into your new home:

Prioritize unpacking

Once the movers are gone,  prioritize unpacking what you need for your first night and agree not to try to do everything right away. Setup the essential rooms first such as kitchen, kids rooms and bathrooms.

But first, enjoy

Sit back, relax and enjoy your new beautiful home. Take in the simple pleasures of an empty house that you will fill with many memories in the years to come.
